Monarchs, Monsters and Men

Monarchs, Monsters and Men is a series of photographs which explore the expectations of masculinity, emotion and play. This project will go back into history and into childhood, where folk tales and nursery rhymes inform boys of their expected behaviour.

The images are constructed out of a multitude of photographs of the setting and the model at different angles digitally stitched together, creating a perspective that is off kilter, familiar but creepy. The images are then printed, drawn and painted on; the works end up being something between a photograph and a painting, unsettling the viewer, and questioning the binary of fact and fiction.

White men still hold much of the power and the money in the world, but are also the least sensitive, the least empathetic, the most defensive.  This project attempts to both taunt and soften these characters; by showing their construction, they are simultaneously critiqued and shown empathy.
