EXHIBITION:
UPSTREAM
YOUNGPLACE 180 Shaw Street, Toronto
June 13 - 27, Opening Reception June 14 3-5PM
Upstream is a story, a performance expressed through a series of photographs. It is a critical examination of the role of the white European male throughout western art history. It uses the Humber River in Toronto as its setting, where the character transforms, inhabiting some of the roles we play and are bound by as males; such as explorer, protector, creator, destroyer.
In this series of works, I attempt to uncover some of consequences of raising men to suppress emotion, and of encouraging capitalist ambitions at the expense of nature and humanity. Men are frozen, thier human emotions and neediness hidden, they are stuck. They are on the verge of action but paralyzed - a sculpture or a photograph, set within a tableaux.
UPSTREAM INSITU
In addition to the show I’ve also wheat-pasted 13 images near the mouth of the Humber River on bridges, walls, rocks etc. These images are placed where the original image was taken. If you are near the Humber River (or can’t make the show) take a look. It’s a bit like an art treasure hunt! The images are up now to coincide with Toronto’s Contact Photography Festival which happens in May. I’m not sure how long they will last… the weather or the city might pull them down. Here is a map of where to find the images.
